The authors evaluate Lyapunov exponents and hence the Lyapunov dimension for the equations derived by \textit{J. W. Miles} [Q. Appl. Math. 20, 21-32 (1962; Zbl 0108.18601); Physica D 11, 309-323 (1984; Zbl 0577.70025)] as an approximation to the equations of motion of spherical pendulum forced at a frequency close to its natural frequency. Some results are also presented for the mathematically related problem of surface waves in a vibrating cylinder.
