This paper deals with weak solutions of the system of conservation laws \(u_ t + (\varphi (| u |) u)_ x = 0\), in one space dimension. The system is typically nonstrictly hyperbolic; an important case is when \(\varphi (| u |) = | u |^ 2\). If the initial data are bounded the author proves the existence of global solutions and the uniqueness in Kruzhkov's sense; stability and regularity properties are also given. Another kind of results concern rotational properties of such a solution. The main point in the paper is in exploiting a result by \textit{D. Wagner} [J. Differ. Equ. 68, 118-136 (1987; Zbl 0647.76049)]; a similar existence theorem was given by \textit{T. Liu} and \textit{C. Wang} [J. Differ. Equ. 57, 1-14 (1985; Zbl 0576.35075)] by using a Glimm-type scheme.
