According to the author, this textbook grew from notes for a graduate course taught at Wesleyan University, and it contains seven chapters. Each chapter begins with an overview, and at the end historical notes and excercises are given. Chapter 1 treats the definitions of spaces with a finite alphabet and the shift transformation. Chapter 2 is about homeomorphisms between topological Markov shifts which commute with the shift transformations. Chapter 3 is about automorphisms of topological Markov shifts. Chapter 4 is about embeddings and factor maps. Chapter 5 treats almost-topological conjugacy of topological Markov shifts. Chapter 6 contains some additional topics: Markov measures, Markov subgroups, cellular automata and channel codes. Chapter 7 is about countable state Markov shifts, Perron-Frobenius theory, and basic symbolic dynamics.
