The authors determine the number of isomorphism classes and a representative for each class for nonsingular hyperelliptic curves of genus \(g\) over finite fields of characteristic \(2g+1\) for \(g=1,2\), and 3. In the case \(g=1\), this means elliptic curves over fields of characteristic 3. The supersingular case here was previously done by \textit{F.~Morain} [Util. Math. 52, 241--253 (1997; Zbl 0898.11023)]. In the case \(g=2\), they classify curves of genus 2 over finite fields of characteristic 5, which was a missing case in an earlier article by the first author and \textit{D.~Yun} [In: Batten, Lynn (ed.) et al., Information security and privacy. 7th Australasian conference, ACISP 2002, Lect. Notes Comput. Sci. 2384, 190--202 (2002; Zbl 1022.11029)]. In the case \(g=3\), they give lower and upper bounds for the number of isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 over finite fields of characteristic 7, and they give equations for curves in the various classes they determine.
