The authors [Constructive Approximation 4, 21-64 (1988)] generalize \textit{E. A. Rehmanov}'s [(i) Math. USSR, Sb. 47, 155-193 (1984; Zbl 0522.42018)] result as follows: Let \(W=e^{-Q}\), where Q is of smooth polynomial growth at infinity. The authors omit the technical details and show that \(Q(x)=| x|^{\alpha}(\log (2+x^ 2))^{\beta},\alpha >0\), \(\beta\in R\) is a typical example. Let \(a_ n=a_ n(w)\) denote the positive root of the equation \((1)\quad n=2\pi^{-1}\int^{1}_{0}a_ nt Q'(a_ nt)dt/\sqrt{1-t^ 2}\) for n large enough. \textit{H. N. Mahaskar} and \textit{E. G. Saff} [(ii) Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 285, 203-234 (1984; Zbl 0546.41014); Constructive Approximation 1, 71-91 (1985; Zbl 0582.41009)] showed that if \(W=e\) Q, where for example Q is even and convex in (0,\(\infty)\) or \(Q(x)=| x|^{\alpha}\), \(\alpha >0\), they showed that: \((2)\quad \| PW\|_{L_{\infty}({\mathbb{R}})}=\| PW\|_{L_{\infty}[-a_ n,a_ n]},\) \(P\in P_ n\), where \(a_ n\) is a positive root of (1), \(n\geq 1\). Further \(a_ n\) is in an asymptotic sense ``best possible''. In this note authors show that convexity of Q in (2) can be replaced by the weaker condition that xQ'(x) is increasing to infinity in (0,\(\infty)\), together with an integrability condition at 0, and established in a very precise sense, the sharpness of existing \(L_ p\) infinite-finite range inequalities \(0\leq p<\infty.\) The result of Rahmanov (i) and Mhaskar and Saff (ii) correspond to nth root asymptotics of orthogonal/extremal polynomials in the plane (asymptotic for \(P_ n(a_ nz)^{1/n})\), the asymptotics obtained by \textit{D. S. Lubinsky}, \textit{H. N. Mhaskar} and \textit{E. B. Saff} [Constructive Approximation 4, 65-83 (1988)] for the recurrence relation coefficients corresponds to stronger ratio asymptotics. A still stronger asymptotic is an asymptotic for leading coefficients of orthogonal polynomials or extremal errors, that in turn leads to asymptotics for \(P_ n(a_ nz)\) in the plane. These strong or power asymptotics for \(L_ p\) extremal errors and extremal polynomials form the main subsets of this monograph. The authors extend some results of P. Nevai, E. A. Rahmanov, H. N. Mhaskar and of theirself and improve the results established with their coworkers. They prove some new results on this line. But most of them are from their own previous work.
