Let \(X\) be a scheme, \(X'= X\otimes_\mathbb{Z} \mathbb{Z} [\sqrt {-1}]\), \(X_r\) the real spectrum on \(X\), \(X_{\text{et}}\) the étale site on \(X\) and \(X_b\) the intersection of \(X_r\) and \(X_{\text{et}}\). The main result of this work (a generalization of Cox's theorem) says roughly that the cohomological dimension of \(X_b\) of 2-primary torsion sheaves is either the same as that of \(X'_{\text{et}}\) or 1 higher. The author next generalizes a result of \textit{K. S. Brown}. Let \(\Gamma\) be a profinite group having an open subgroup \(\Delta\) with \(\text{cd}_p (\Delta)< \infty\) for some prime \(p\). Let \({\mathcal T}\) be the (boolean) space of all subgroups of order \(p\) in \(\Gamma\). Suppose that \(\Gamma\) contains no subgroup isomorphic to \(\mathbb{Z}/p \times \mathbb{Z}/p\). The author shows that the natural homomorphisms \[ H^n (\Gamma, A)\to H^n_\Gamma ({\mathcal T}, A) \] are isomorphisms for \(n> \text{cd}_p (\Delta)\) and for any \(p\)-primary \(\Gamma\)-module \(A\). In the final part of the book, comparison theorems for the cohomologies of \(X_b\), \(X_{\text{et}}\) and the real étale site \(X_{\text{ret}}\) of \(X\) are proved. In addition to proving the above results, the author provides useful introductions to many ideas found in SGA4 [= Sém. Géométrie Algébrique 1963/64, Lect. Notes Math. 280 (1972)] in particular the notions of site and topos.
