    An abstract version of the classical Farkas lemma for locally convex spaces is given. The abstract Farkas lemma is shown to imply Farkas-type results which have been obtained by \textit{K. Shimizu, E. Aiyoshi} and \textit{R. Katayama} [J. Optimization Theory Appl. 40, 451-462 (1983; Zbl 0513.90069)], \textit{M. Schechter} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 7, 696-701 (1976; Zbl 0341.90043)], \textit{E. Eisenberg} [J. Oper. Res. Soc. America 14, 157- 163 (1966)] \textit{C. Zalinescu} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 66, 651-678 (1978; Zbl 0396.90070)] and \textit{M. F. Smiley} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 40, 153-158 (1972; Zbl 0237.90055)].
