Let \(X\) be a minimal projective Gorenstein \(3\)-fold of general type. For such \(3\)-folds the following inequality \(\chi(\omega_{X})\leq 2p_{g}(X)\) holds. In the paper under review the authors improve the above inequality and give two applications. The first application is a bound from above of the birational invariants of \(F\), where \(F\) is a smooth model of a generic irreducible component of the general fibre of the canonical map \(\Phi_{| K_X| }\), under the assumption that the canonical map is of fibre type. The second application is an inequality of Noether type between \(c_1\) and \(c_2\) which improves the main result in [\textit{D.-K. Shin}, Math. Z. 225, No. 1, 133--138 (1997; Zbl 0871.14032)]. The authors prove that if \(X\) is a smooth projective minimal \(3\)-fold of general type then \(c_1^3 \leq \frac{1}{27} c_1c_2+\frac{10}{3}.\) For results on Noether inequality of smooth minimal threefolds see also [\textit{F. Catanese, M. Chen} and \textit{D.-D. Zhang}, Math. Res. Lett. 13, No. 4, 653--666 (2006; Zbl 1134.14024); \textit{M. Chen}, Math. Res. Lett. 11, No. 5--6, 833--852 (2004; Zbl 1079.14047)].
