It is shown how a symmetric matrix that is formed by a tridiagonal matrix and elements from low rank matrices outside the three main diagonals can be transformed to tridiagonal form by means of a sequence of orthogonal Givens rotations. Such matrices occur in discretizations of Green functions for two point boundary value problems.
