The paper considers properties of bounded linear disjointness preserving operators between Riesz spaces \(E\) and \(F\) where the \(F\) is Dedekind complete. For such operators \(S\) and \(T\), it is established with appropriate assumptions that if \(S\) and \(T\) are disjoint in the space of order bounded operators, then \(E\) can be decomposed into a sum of disjoint bands so that for each \(f\) in one of the bands, \(Sf\) is disjoint from \(Tf\). A similar analysis demonstrates that the sum of operators \(S\) and \(T\) has the property that there exists a decomposition into the sum of disjoint bands so that \(S+T\) restricted to each band is disjointness preserving. One example of this type of theorem assumes that \(S\) and \(T\) are order continuous and Maharam. This study utilizes the associated Boolean algebras of the bands of the Riesz spaces and the corresponding associated operators. The various results on the Boolean algebras are of interest in themselves as well as a means of analyzing the original operators. The final section of the paper provides results on spectral properties of these operators.
