    Given an irreducible admissible representation \(\Pi\) of a reductive group over a non-archimedean local field \(F\) its character is defined by the trace distribution associated with \(\Pi\). Due to Harish-Chandra this distribution is given by a locally integrable function which is locally constant in an open and dense set. These distributions appear in the trace formula and are used to obtain local liftings between representations of different groups. In dealing with the relative trace formula these distributions are replaced by Bessel distributions. It is shown that the Bessel distribution attached by Gelfand and Kazhdan to an infinite-dimensional irreducible admissible representation of \(GL_2(F)\) behaves similarly as the trace distribution, i.e, is given by a locally integrable function which is locally constant on an open and dense set of \(GL_2(F)\).
