This paper is concerned with topological groupoids, their \(C^*\)-algebras and the \(K\)-theory of such \(C^*\)-algebras. Throughout the paper all groupoids are second countable, locally compact, Hausdorff, principal \(r\)-discrete groupoids with counting measures as Haar system. Let \(C^*_{\text{red}}(G)\) be Renault's reduced \(C^*\)-algebra of the groupoid \(G\). Two situations where a trio of groupoids \(G\), \(G'\) and \(H\) are related in some specific way (they can be described as ``factor groupoids'' and ``subgroupoids'') are considered. For each case it is shown that there is a six-term exact sequence of associated \(K\)-groups \(K_i(C^*_{\text{red}}(G'))\), \(K_i(C^*_{\text{red}}(G))\), \(K_i(C^*_{\text{red}}(H))\). In the proofs a lot of \(C^*\)-algebra machinery including the theory of groupoid \(C^*\)-algebras, the operator \(K\)-theory and even the Kasparov \(KK\)-theory is used.
