The computation of the Lie algebra homology of matrices [\textit{J.-L. Loday} and \textit{D. Quillen}, Comment. Math. Helv. 59, 565-591 (1984; Zbl 0565.17006); \textit{B. Tsygan}, Usp. Mat. Nauk 38, 217-218 (1983; Zbl 0518.17002)] establishes an isomorphism of graded commutative Hopf algebras \(H^L_* ({\mathfrak {gl}} (A)) \cong S^* (HC_{*-1} (A))\) (\(A\) is an algebra with unit over a field of characteristic zero). In this paper the authors give an alternative proof of this theorem which does not involve Weyl's invariant theory for \(\text{GL} (\mathbb{C})\) and use this approach to compute the Chevalley-Eilenberg homology in some new cases.
