The authors construct a nonseparable reflexive Banach space \(X_{\omega_1}\) possessing a transfinite Schauder basis, \((e_\alpha)_{\alpha<\omega_1}\), which does not contain any unconditional basic sequence. The clever construction heavily involves the \(\rho\)-function [\textit{S.\ Tordočević}, Acta Math.\ 159, 261--294 (1987; Zbl 0658.03028)]. Many results concerning the geometry of \(X_{\omega_1}\) and the operators on \(X_{\omega_1}\) are obtained.
