Let G be a compact abelian group and \(\theta\) a continuous surjective endomorphism of G. It is well-known that Haar measure on G is \(\theta\)- invariant. It is shown that ergodicity of \(\theta\) is equivalent to a number of different conditions, e.g. to that \(\theta\) be completely mixing. An interesting consequence is that ergodicity of some power of \(\theta\) implies ergodicity of all powers of \(\theta\). These results are applied to generalized automata. Thus, let \(G={\mathbb{Z}}^ S_ 2\) where \(S={\mathbb{N}}_ 0\) or \(S={\mathbb{Z}}\). The authors obtain sufficient conditions on \(\theta\) which ensure that \(\theta\) is completely mixing, or strongly transitive, or that \(\theta\) has periodic points of all orders and the set of periodic points of \(\theta\) is dense in G.
