This paper under review is a continuation of the recent work of the third author [Glas. Mat., III. Ser. 46, No. 1, 43--48 (2011; Zbl 1217.47073)]. The purpose of this paper is to prove the following result. Let \(R\) be a prime ring of characteristic different two and let \(D: R\longrightarrow R\) be an additive mapping satisfying the relation \(2D(x^3)=D(x^2)x+x^2D(x)+D(x)x^2+xD(x^2)\) for all \(x\in R\). In this case, \(D\) is a derivation. This result is closely related to a classical result of \textit{I. N. Herstein} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 8, 1104--1110 (1958; Zbl 0216.07202)], which states that any Jordan derivation on a prime ring of characteristic different from two is a derivation. | |||
