The authors discuss a new algorithm to solve fractional differential equations based on the operational matrix of a generalized hat function. They approximate the higher derivative appearing in the differential equation as an expansion in the generalized hat basis functions. This approximation is integrated through the use of fractional-order generalized hat function operational matrices of integration. In particular, the given fractional differential equation is converted into a system of algebraic equations, simplifying the solution procedure, and the method is computer-oriented, and therefore fractional differential equations of different orders \(\alpha\) become a matter of changing the \(\alpha\) only.
