The paper is concerned with the theory of stratifications of real and complex analytic spaces. One main goal is the generalization of a result of Verdier, which states that for a proper map of complex analytic spaces the direct image sheaves of constructible sheaves are again constructible. This is generalized to proper maps of real analytic spaces using stratification theory of Hironaka, Mather, Thom and Whitney. Moreover we introduce the notion of quasiconstructible sheaves which are more general than constructible sheaves and which include the coherent sheaves. We give a systematic account on the basic properties and some criteria for quasiconstructibility. Applications of the results can be found in the authors' paper in J. Reine Angew. Math. 351, 20-41 (1984; Zbl 0542.14003). Moreover, there is included a simple proof of the well- known fact, that Whitney regularity is a constructible and non-empty property for complex analytic spaces.
