A module \(M\) for a semisimple algebraic group \(G\) over a field \(k\) of characteristic \(p>0\) is said to have a good filtration if there is a filtration of \(M\) whose quotients are induced from one-dimensional \(B\)-modules (\(B\) a Borel subgroup in \(G\)). An important theorem in modular representation theory says that the tensor product of two modules with good filtrations also has a good filtration. A related result is that the restriction of \(M\) to a Levi subgroup has a good filtration (when \(M\) does). The author gives a new and very quick proof of these theorems. His proof relies on Lusztig's canonical bases. More explicitly, he invokes the so-called based modules [introduced by \textit{G. Lusztig} in his book: ``Introduction to quantum groups'', Progress in Mathematics 110, Birkhäuser (1993; Zbl 0788.17010)] and takes advantage of the relation between canonical bases and crystal bases. This way he obtains first a version of the above results in the case of quantum groups and then he specializes the quantum parameter to \(1\in k\) to obtain the result for \(G\).
