In this paper a proof of the Weil reciprocity law \[ \prod_{P\in S}f(P)^{\nu_ P(g)}=\prod_{P\in S}g(p)^{\nu_ P(f)}\tag{*} \] is given. Here and in the following let \(S\) denote a compact Riemann surface of arbitrary genus, \(f\) and \(g\) meromorphic functions with disjoint divisors \((f)\) and \((g)\), and \(\nu_ P\) the valuation at the point \(P\). In the case of \(S=\mathbb{P}^ 1\) a proof can be obtained along the following path. Write \(f\) and \(g\) as quotients of polynomials. Now use the resultant of a pair of polynomials in one variable. The reciprocity law follows now from the fact that the resultant can be expressed in terms of the zeros of the involved polynomials. The ``usual'' proofs of (*) for higher genus Riemann surfaces use different techniques. By using the Burchnall-Chaundy-Krichever correspondence, the author gives a proof in the spirit of resultants even in these cases. After choosing a reference point \(Q\), the functions \(f\) and \(g\) can be written as quotients of functions which are everywhere regular except at \(Q\). To such functions commuting differential operators can be assigned. Using the resultant of these differential operators the reciprocity law can be proved in the completely analogous manner.
