T-theory is the authors' abbreviation for a theory of injective envelopes of metric spaces, which has been developed by the first author and some colleagues in Bielefeld, originally motivated by reconstruction problems of phylogenetic trees. As entitled the paper gives an overview of the theory and sketches some connexions and applications to other fields such as valuated matroids and affine buildings or to arbitrary groups. A large part deals with split decompositions of metrics and presents for instance a connexion to the travelling salesman problem. The paper gives 27 references for proofs and details, some of them yet in preparation.
