Let \(\int^ T_ 1|\zeta(1+it)|^ 2dt=\zeta(2)T-\pi\log T+R(T)\). Then it is shown that \(R(T)\) is of order \((\log T)^{1/3}(\log\log T)^{2/3}\), by using the Vinogradov-Korobov exponential sum estimates. Moreover it is proved that \[ \int^ T_ 1R(t)\;dt\ll T,\qquad\int^ T_ 1R(t)^ 2\;dt\ll T(\log\log T)^ 4. \] The proofs require careful use of mean value techniques for Dirichlet polynomials.
