The authors consider one-parameter groups of unbounded operators \(\left(e^{-itH}\right)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}\) which arise as formal solutions of ill-posed problems, the case where \(H\) is the Laplace operator being a typical example. The authors show that under certain growth conditions, these groups are special subsets of the regular multipliers introduced by J. Esterle. The latter originated from the so called ``closed ideal problem'' in commutative radical Banach algebras. One of the results obtained in the paper under review admits a simple definition of an infinitesimal generator \(-iH\) of a semigroup in terms related to quasimultipliers. Relations with regularized semigroups are studied and boundary values of holomorhic semigroups are investigated. Special attention is paid to the usage of fractional differentiation and integration to construct a functional calculus for holomorphic semigroups.
