The author improves earlier results (cf. \textit{D. Jennings} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 68, No. 2, 465-469 (1994; Zbl 0808.05033)]) by showing that the squares of side \(1/2,1/3,1/4,\dots\) can be packed into a rectangle of size 31/30 by 629/1000. The excess area in this rectangle is less than 1\%; the question of whether this excess can be made arbitrarily small remains open.
