The main result asserts that, given a \(C^*\)-algebra \(\mathcal{A}_0\), considering the \(C^*\)-algebra \(\mathcal{A}\) of all \(n\times n\) matrices with entries from \(\mathcal{A}_0\), and fixing a Hermitian matrix \(A\in\mathcal{A}\) with bandwidth \(m\) (that is, \([A]_{i,j}=0\) if \(| i-j|>m\)) and spectrum in the interval \([-1,1]\), then for any function \(f(z)\), analytic for \(z\) in a related domain called a Bernstein ellipse, continuous on the boundary of this domain and having and real values when \(z\) is real, one has an estimate of the form \(\|[f(A)]_{i,j}\| \leq c\zeta^{| i-j|}\), where \(c\) is a constant and \(0<\zeta<1\), both of them given by explicit formulas.
