The author classifies the Harish-Chandra modules over the Virasoro Lie algebra proving the following theorem 1: Any Harish-Chandra module over the Virasoro algebra is a highest weight module, a lowest weight module, or a module of the intermediate series. The proof uses results on modular representations of finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebras over fields of finite characteristic, especially a result of \textit{H. Chang} [Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hamb. 14, 151-184 (1941; Zbl 0025.24202)]. The same method gives a proof of theorem 2: If \(K\) is algebraically closed of characteristic zero, any Harish-Chandra module over the Cartan algebra \(W_ 1\) is a highest weight module, a lowest weight module, or a module of the intermediate series. Taking into account the papers of \textit{V. Chari} [Invent. Math. 85, 317-335 (1986; Zbl 0603.17011)] and \textit{A. I. Kostrikin} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 243, 565-567 (1978; Zbl 0412.17013)] the results of the author complete the solution of the classification problem for projective Harish-Chandra modules over simple graded Lie algebras of finite growth.
