This paper gives an algebraic, combinatorial proof of an identity due to \textit{P. Colmez} [Invent. Math. 95, No. 1, 161--205 (1989; Zbl 0666.12008)]. The author's proof, and hence the identity, hold for any completely valued field \(F\). The identity, which is too complicated to be stated briefly here, is best understood by reference to the Colmez paper, where it is Theorem 1 (p. 163). The simplest case of the identity reads \[ \text{sign}(\log | \epsilon |)/zw=\sum_{n\in\mathbb Z}(\varepsilon -\varepsilon^{-1})(\varepsilon^ nz+\varepsilon^{-n}w)^{- 1}(\varepsilon^{n+1}z+\varepsilon^{-n-1}w)^{-1} \] with \(z,w,\varepsilon \in F^*\) and \(| \varepsilon | \neq 1\).
