The authors consider the eigenvalue problem \(-{\text{ div}} (| \nabla u| ^{p(x)-2}\nabla u)=\lambda | u| ^{p(x)-2}u\) in \(\Omega\), \(u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\), where \(\Omega\) is a bounded open subset of \(\mathbb R^{n}\) and \(p(\cdot)\) is a continuous function of \(\bar{\Omega}\) to \(]1,+\infty[\), and show that the set of variational eigenvalues is unbounded from above. Then the authors show that if \(n=1\) the infimum of the eigenvalues is strictly positive if and only if \(p(\cdot)\) is monotone, and deduce a sufficient condition in order that the infimum of the eigenvalues is strictly positive in case \(n>1\).
