The stop operator \({\mathcal S}: W^{1,1}(0,T; \mathbb{R}^N) \times Z \to W^{1,1}(0,T; \mathbb{R}^N)\) associated to a convex closed subset \(Z\) of \(\mathbb{R}^N\) is defined as the solution operator \(x = {\mathcal S}(u, x^0)\) of the variational inequality \(\langle \dot x - \dot u, \varphi - x\rangle \geq 0\) a.e. for all \(\varphi \in Z\), \(x(t) \in Z\) for \(t\in [0,T]\), \(x(0) = x^0\). The author gives a detailed proof of the local Lipschitz continuity of the stop operator provided the boundary \(\partial Z\) of \(Z\) is of class \(W^{2,\infty}\). A counterexample shows that \(C^{1, 1/2}\)-smoothness of \(\partial Z\) is not sufficient.
