The one-dimensional motion of a beam of gas immersed in the vacuum is mathematically described by a system of two Navier-Stokes equations in which pressure and viscosity are nonlinear functions of the density. It is assumed that initial density vanishes at the end points, but may have discontinuities, while velocity is continuous. Under these hypotheses it is possible to prove existence and uniqueness of solutions in a finite time. The procedure is that of approximating the solution with a family of mollified initial data. The paper is not very original since (despite of the claim of the authors) the estimates they use are standard.
