Let \(\mathbb{D}\) denote the open unit disk in the complex plane, \(\mathbb{T}\) its boundary and \(H(\mathbb{D})\) the class of all holomorphic functions on \(\mathbb{D}\). Moreover, we consider the normalized Lebesgue measure \(m\) on \(\mathbb{T}\). The Hardy space \(H^1\) consists of all \(f \in H(\mathbb{D})\) with \[ \sup_{r < 1} \int_0^{2 \pi} |f(re^{i \Theta})| \, d \Theta < \infty. \] Each function \(f \in H^1\) has almost everywhere non-tangential limits on the unit circle. We write \(f^*\) to describe the function on \(\mathbb{T}\) generated by these boundary values. An Orlicz function is a convex non-decreasing function \(\psi:[0, \infty) \to [0, \infty)\) with \(\psi(0)=0\) and \(\psi(\infty)= \infty\). For a positive measure \(\mu\) on some measurable space \(S\), the Orlicz space \(L^{\psi}(\mu)\) is defined to be the set of all classes of measurable functions \(f: S \to \mathbb{C}\) such that \(\int_{S} \psi (\frac{|f|}{C}) \, d \mu < \infty\) for some \(C>0\), equipped with the norm \[ \|f\|_{\psi}:= \inf \left \{ C >0: \int_{S} \psi \left (\frac{|f|}{C} \right ) \; d \mu \leq 1 \right \}. \] Now, the Hardy-Orlicz space \(H^{\psi}\) is the linear subspace that contains all \(f \in H^1\) with \(f^{*} \in L^{\psi}(m)\). Every analytic self-map \(\phi: \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{D}\) induces a bounded composition operator \(C_{\phi}: H^{\psi} \to H^{\psi}\), \(f \mapsto f \circ \phi\). Composition operators occur naturally in many problems and have been studied by a lot of authors under several points of view, see, e.g., the monographs [\textit{C. C. Cowen} and \textit{B. D. MacCluer}, Composition operators on spaces of analytic functions. Studies in Advanced Mathematics. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press (1995; Zbl 0873.47017)] and [\textit{J. H. Shapiro}, Composition operators and classical function theory. Universitext: Tracts in Mathematics. New York: Springer-Verlag (1993; Zbl 0791.30033)]. The article under review is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the generalization of results on composition operators which are well known for Hardy spaces to the setting of Hardy-Orlicz spaces. More precisely, the authors construct a ``slow'' Blaschke product which induces a compact composition operator on the Hardy-Orlicz space \(H^{\psi}\) but is ``nowhere differentiable''. They find a surjective symbol which generates a composition operator that is compact on \(H^{\psi}\) and furthermore belongs to all Schatten classes. The second part of the paper deals with composition operators acting in the classical setting of the Hardy space \(H^2\). First, a new characterization of closed range composition operators is given. Finally, the authors show that the characterization of Schatten class composition operators of Luecking and Luecking-Zhu are equivalent, see \textit{D. H. Luecking} [J. Funct. Anal. 73, 345--368 (1997; Zbl 0618.47018)] and \textit{D. H. Luecking} and \textit{K. Zhu} [Am. J. Math. 114, No. 5, 1127--1145 (1992; Zbl 0792.47032)].
