The Cauchy problem for a two-dimensional semilinear heat equation with radial symmetry \[ u_t=u_{rr}+u_r/r+e^u\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^+ \times (0,T), \quad (r=\sqrt {x^2+y^2},x,y \in\mathbb{R}) \] with smooth, bounded initial data \(u_0(r)\) is considered. The aim is to obtain monotonicity in time where the solution is large, like in the Galaktionov's and Posashkov's solution for the one-dimensional problem. The method is based on intersection comparison of \(u(r, t)\) with the set of stationary solutions of this equation. The same result is obtained for semilinear diffusion equation from physical chemistry \[ u_t= \Delta u+u^p,\quad 1<p<{N+2 \over(N-2)_+},\quad (\mathbb{R}^2\text{ is replaced by }\mathbb{R}^N). \] Finally the most general result on eventual monotonicity for equations with power-type nonlinearities of the form \(u_t=\Delta u^m+u^p\), \(m>1\), \(p>1\), is stated.
