Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \(C\) a closed bounded subset of \(X\). We say that \(C\) has the point of continuity property (PCP) if for every closed subset \(K\) of \(C\) the identity map \(i:(K,weak) \to (K,||.||)\) has a point of continuity. Let \(\mathbb N^{<w}\) be the set of all ordered finite sequences of natural numbers with the natural order. A tree in a Banach space \(X\) is a family \((x_{A})\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), of elements of \(X\). The tree is called weakly null if the sequence \((x_{(A,n)})_{n\in \mathbb N}\) is weakly null for every \(A\in \mathbb N^{w}\). Given a tree in \(X\), consider the set \(G\) of all elements of \(X\) of the form \(G= \Sigma x_{B}\), \(B\leq A\), \(A\in N^{<w}\). The authors show that, if a closed bounded subset \(C\) of the Banach space \(X\) contains the set \(G\), where the tree \((x_{A})\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), is weakly null and seminormalized, then \(C\) fails the PCP. In the case when the set \(C\) does not contain sequences equivalent to the basis of \(l^1\), the authors obtain the following nice result (Theorem 2.4). The following assertions are equivalent: (i) \(C\) fails PCP. (ii) There exists a weakly null seminormalized tree \((x_{A})\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), in \(X\) such that the set \(G= \Sigma x_{B}\), \(B\leq A\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), is contained in \(C\). The tree \((x_{A})\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), can be chosen to be a basic sequence for some rearrangement. Moreover, if the dual space \(X^{*}\) is separable, the \(w^{*}\) closure of the set \(G \in X^{**}\) is weak-star homeomorphic to the Cantor set. In this case, if \(C\) is convex then the weak star closure of the convex hull of \(G\) in \(X^{**}\) is affinely weak star homeomorphic to the set of regular Borel probability measures on the Cantor set. The authors obtain corollaries of their main theorem (Theorem 2.4). One of them is the following characterization of Banach spaces that fail PCP and contain no copy of \(l^1\). Let \(X\) be a Banach space not containing isomorphic copies of \(l^1\). Then the following assertions are equivalent: (1) \(X\) fails PCP. (2) There is a weakly null tree \((x_{A})\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), in the unit sphere of \(X\) so that the set \(G= \Sigma x_{B}\), \(B\leq A\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), is bounded. (3) There is a weakly null tree \((x_{A})\), \(A\in \mathbb N^{<w}\), in the unit sphere of \(X\) so that all its branches are of type \(P\). (4) There exists a weakly null tree in the unit sphere of \(X\) without boundedly complete branches.
