Several authors have analyzed the influence of various subgroup embedding properties on the structure of a finite group. In this paper, the authors deal with the following concept, which was introduced by H. Wielandt: Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(H,K\) subgroups of \(G\). \(H\) is said to be weakly closed in \(K\) with respect to \(G\) if, for any \(g\in G\) such that \(H^g\leq K\), it holds \(H^g=H\). In particular, when \(H\) is a subgroup of prime power order and \(K\) is a Sylow subgroup containing it, \(H\) is simply said to be a weakly closed subgroup of \(G\) or weakly closed in \(G\). This embedding property was also investigated by \textit{H. Fukushima} [in J. Math. Soc. Japan 30, 133-137 (1978; Zbl 0364.20023)], \textit{G. Glauberman} [in Math. Z. 112, 89-100 (1969; Zbl 0179.32402)], and this last author and \textit{J. G. Thompson} [in Pac. J. Math. 26, 73-83 (1968; Zbl 0172.03001)]. In the paper under review some criteria for a finite group \(G\) to be either \(p\)-nilpotent, \(p\) a prime number, or supersolvable, are obtained under the assumption that certain subgroups of prime power order are weakly closed subgroups.
