Surveying fifty years of prior work on periodicity by obstructionists such as Murasugi, Przytycki, Livingston, Politarczyk and the first author, this paper refines Naik's results [\textit{S. Naik}, Pac. J. Math. 166, No. 2, 357--371 (1994; Zbl 0817.57005), Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 122, No. 2, 281--290 (1997; Zbl 0891.57009)] for classical links in $S^3$. In particular, numerous new low crossing knots are proved not periodic for period 3.
