The `positive polynomial approximation' on an real interval \([a,b]\) means that the function \(f : [a,b] \to [0,\infty)\) may be approximated by a sequence of real polynomials which are non-negative on \([a,b]\). For \(1 \leq p < \infty,\) it is proved that positive polynomial approximation property holds in the space \(L_{p}(\mathbb{R}, d\mu)\) (or \(C_{w}^{0}\)) if and only if the algebraic polynomials are dense in \(L_{2p}(\mathbb{R},d\mu)\) (or \(C_{\sqrt{w}}^{0}\)). Moreover, the condition that \(\mu\) is not a \(2p-\)singular measure (or \(\sqrt{w}\) is not a singular weight) implies the more general `oscillation-diminishing polynomial approximation' property.
