The author considers a question presented by D. McDuff and L. Polterovich, concerning upper bounds for the Hofer norm of a commutator of two Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a closed symplectic manifold. More precisely, he constructs Hamiltonian commutators with arbitrary large Hofer norm on products \((\Sigma \times N, \omega \oplus \omega')\), where \((\Sigma, \omega)\) is a closed surface of positive genus and \((N, \omega')\) is a torus or a closed symplectic manifold admitting a pair of transverse closed Lagrangians whose union is weakly exact; see Theorem 1. The main tool in the proof is a theorem by \textit{M. Usher} [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 16, No. 8, 1571--1616 (2014; Zbl 1307.53071)], giving a lower bound for the separation energy of two Lagrangians, as an adaptation of the Chekanov bound for the displacement energy. | |||
