    This paper is concerned with understanding the asymptotic behavior of the transfer operator associated to maps preserving an infinite measure. The author obtains a result on higher-order expansions for the coefficients of scalar renewal sequences using the main idea from one of her previous papers [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 35, No. 2, 585--614 (2015; Zbl 1316.37007)]. This result improves on the error terms previously found by the author [loc. cit.] and by \textit{I. Melbourne} and \textit{D. Terhesiu} [Invent. Math. 189, No. 1, 61--110 (2012; Zbl 1263.37011)]. The paper also studies the higher-order asymptotics for operator renewal sequences, continuing to develop the theory from Melbourne and Terhesiu [loc. cit.]. Some authors who obtained first-order asymptotics for the transfer operator include \textit{M. Thaler} [Stud. Math. 143, No. 2, 103--119 (2000; Zbl 0959.37008)] and \textit{S. Gouëzel} [Colloq. Math. 125, No. 2, 193--212 (2011; Zbl 1246.37017)]. Furthermore, the author applies her results to a specific family of Pomeau-Manneville maps introduced by \textit{C. Liverani} et al. [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 19, No. 3, 671--685 (1999; Zbl 0988.37035)].
