In [J.\ Algebra 302, No.\ 2, 881--886 (2006; Zbl 1109.17008)] and [J.\ Eur.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 10, No.\ 2, 391--398 (2008; Zbl 1144.17013)] the authors introduced certain self-similar nil restricted Lie algebras of polynomial growth over fields of prime characteristic \(p\) whose properties resemble those of Grigorchuk and Gupta-Sidki. The Lie algebra \(L\), which was introduced by the first author for \(p=2\) (Fibonacci restricted Lie algebra) and generalized by the second and third authors to arbitrary \(p\), is generated by two derivations \(v_1\) and \(v_2\) of the truncated polynomial ring in countably many variables. In the paper under review the authors show that the associative algebra \(A\) generated by \(v_1\) and \(v_2\) is always \(\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}\)-graded. They also prove that \(A\) is graded nil and can be represented as a sum of two locally nilpotent subalgebras unless \(p=m^2+m+1\) for some integer \(m\). (Recently it has been proved by L.\ Bartholdi and independently by Ya.\ S.\ Krylyuk that \(A\) is not graded nil in the latter case.) Moreover, the authors prove that another family of self-similar restricted Lie algebras generated by \(p\) derivations of the truncated polynomial ring in countably many variables (suggested in [J.\ Eur.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 10, No.\ 2, 391--398 (2008; Zbl 1144.17013)] and for \(p=2\) again being the Fibonacci restricted Lie algebra) and their associative hulls are always \(\mathbb{Z}^p \)-graded, graded nil, and sums of two locally nilpotent subalgebras.
