Let \(F\) be a totally real number field, let \(f\) be a Hilbert newform over \(F\), and let \(\pi\) be the unitary irreducible automorphic representation of \(\text{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_F)\) associated with \(f\). Further, let \(K\) be a totally imaginary quadratic extension of \(F\), let \(\chi\) be an unitary character of the group \(\mathbb{A}^*_K/K^*A^*_F\), and let \(\pi_\chi\) be the automorphic representation of \(\text{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_K)\) induced by \(\chi\). Under a natural restriction on the conductor of \(\chi\), the author evaluates the central value \(L(1/2,\pi\times\pi_\chi)\) of the Rankin \(L\)-function, following the approach developed by \textit{A. A. Popa} [Compos. Math., 142, No. 4, 811--866 (2006; Zbl 1144.11041)]. In the author's previous work [see Int. Math. Res. Not. 2006, No. 13, Article ID 26150, 41 p. (2006; Zbl 1141.11028)], such a formula has been obtained under the additional assumption of finiteness of the order of \(\chi\).
