Two classical knots are said to be S-equivalent if a Seifert matrix of one is S-equivalent to a Seifert matrix of the other. Another way of stating this is that the Blanchfield pairings are isometric. The author defines a partial order on the set of S-equivalence classes, in terms of the Seifert matrices, and the corresponding partial order on the set of Blanchfield pairings. He then relates these partial orderings to the concepts of ribbon concordance and cobordism, and identifies the minimal elements as the anisotropic forms.
