The Weyl group of a compact connected Lie group acts on the cohomology of a maximal torus. The normalizer for this action is closely related to the group of self-homotopy equivalences of the completed classifying space. Using this connection, it is possible to estimate the cardinality of the genus set of the classifying space. Another application is the computation of the group of self-homotopy equivalences of classifying spaces of simply connected compact Lie groups.
