Let \(B\) be the unit ball of \({\mathbb C}^n\) and let \(H(B)\) be the space of all holomorphic functions on \(B\). Given \(\varphi, \psi\in H(B)\) with \(\varphi(B)\subset B\), the weighted composition operator \(W_{\varphi, \psi}\) is a linear operator on \(H(B)\) defined by \(W_{\varphi, \psi} f=\psi\cdot(f\circ\varphi)\). Let \(d\nu\) be the normalized volume measure on \(B\) and \(d\nu_\alpha(z)=c_\alpha(1-| z| ^2)^\alpha\, d\nu(z)\;(z\in B)\), where the constant \(c_\alpha\) is chosen so that the total mass of \(d\nu_\alpha\) is \(1\). The well-known \(\alpha\)-weighted \(L^p\)-Bergman space \(A^p(\nu_\alpha)\) \((0<p<\infty, \alpha>-1)\) (in the author's notation) is the subspace of \(L^p(\nu_\alpha)\) consisting of holomorphic functions. In this paper, the author obtains characterizations for bounded (compact) weighted composition operators taking a weighted Bergman space \(A^p(\nu_\alpha)\) into another weighted Bergman space \(A^q(\nu_\beta)\) with restriction \(p\leq q\) on exponents but no restriction on weights. Characterizations for boundedness are described in terms of Carleson conditions for associated pullback measures or certain integral conditions involving the symbol functions. As one may naturally expect, characterizations of compactness are given by the corresponding little oh conditions. Also, similar characterizations are obtained when the domain space or the target space is a Hardy space. When the weight symbol \(\psi\) is constant, these results are all well-known. In addition, the author proves characterizations for bounded (compact) weighted composition operators taking a weighted Bergman space into \(H^\infty(B)\), the space of all bounded holomorphic functions on \(B\).
