Motivated by the works of \textit{J. Sotomayor} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 43, 5--46 (1973; Zbl 0279.58008)] and the last author [J. Differ. Equations 25, 65--89 (1977; Zbl 0315.58016); Physica D 100, No. 1--4, 101--118 (1997; Zbl 0901.34044)], this paper examines the consequences of an involutory reversing symmetry for local 3-dimensional systems having a first integral. Beginning with historical facts and motivations, the definitions of reversibility and first integral are provided. Systems that are reversible with respect to an involution such that its fixed set points are one-dimensional are considered. The paper then proceeds to prove a simpler version of the Montgomery-Bochner theorem, followed by building up results necessary to prove Peixoto's theorem -- the main goal of this paper. This result establishes generic necessary conditions for the structural stability in the class of 3-dimensional reversible systems. Stability conditions on generic one-parameter families of reversible vector fields on the two-dimensional sphere are also stated.
