The problem considered is one of assembly line balancing. The authors introduce a new model of the problem which allows for the flexibility to simultaneously consider variations in cycle time, number of workstations, zoning constraints, idle time and cost. A zero-one goal program is developed that allows the system designer to consider multiple criteria in selecting a preferred schedule.
