Let f be an entire function with Taylor coefficients \(a_ k\). The author has previously proved that if \(| a_{k-1}a_{k+1}/a^ 2_ k| \leq \rho^ 2\), where \(\rho\) \(\approx.456\) then the diagonal Padé approximants to f converge uniformly on compact subsets of the complex plane. [ibid. 1, 349-358 (1985; Zbl 0596.41031)]. He now proves that if the limit \(\lim a_{k-1}a_{k+1}/a^ 2_ k=q\) exists and \(| q| <1\) the same conclusion holds. The proof involves asymptotics of Töplitz determinants and the paper contains many results on asymptotics and discussion of their sharpness (as well as better versions of the result stated above). The introduction is a very nice discussion of the philosophy behind the author's papers on what he calls ``smooth'' Taylor series (the coefficients satisfy conditions like the ones quoted).
