The paper contains a detailed and highly specialized analysis of the validity of Bessel inequality for the system of root functions associated with a second order ordinary linear differential operator, whose coefficients are singular at the ends of the interval \((0,1)\). A necessary and sufficient condition for the validity is given in Theorem 1 in the paper, whose statement is too technical to be reproduced here. The proof of the Theorem 1 requires several auxiliary results and estimates related to the operator. An inequality which is more general than the classical Bessel inequality has the form \[ \sum^\infty_{n=1}|(f,u_n)|^2\|u_n\|^{-2}_H\leq K\|f\|^2_H,\quad f\in H, \] where \(u_n\) denote the system of root functions associated with the second order linear operator with singular coefficients.
