Let \(X\) be a base scheme. The conjectural existence of a \(t\)-structure would imply the existence of the intermediate extension to \(X\) of any Chow motive over an open subscheme of \(X\). This paper gives an unconditional construction of intermediate extensions, independent of \(t\)-structures, in a context which includes the extension from a Shimura variety to its Baily-Borel compactification, of Chow motives associated to Kuga families of abelian varieties.
