The authors present an elementary introduction to the theory of Betrand pairs of curves and ruled surfaces. Bertrand pairs of ruled surfaces are introduced as offsets in the context of line geometry. Some fundamental properties of these pairs are shown [see also \textit{E. Kruppa}, Zur Differentialgeometrie der Strahlflächen und Raumkurven, Sitzungsber., Abt. II, Österr. Akad. Wiss., Math.-Naturwiss. Kl. 157, 143-176 (1949; Zbl 0036.115)]. [Reviewer's comment: Though the authors try to justify the presentation of the basic material from differential geometry with the argument that it has been cast in a form suitable for CAGD purposes, the reviewer could not find any difference compared with its exhibition in standard text books on elementary differential geometry. The reviewer also does not agree with the authors' statement `that the work of Kruppa does not seem to develop the more interesting results for developable surfaces'.].
