Let \(G\) be the absolute Galois group of the field of rationals, \(p\) a prime number and \(F\) an algebraic closure of \({\mathbb F}_p.\) Let \(\rho: G\to \text{GL}_2(F)\) be a modular representation of level \(N\), say, which is unramified at \(p\). Then \(\rho\) is a subrepresentation in the \(p\)-torsion of \(J_1(N)\) or \(J_1(Np).\) The main result of the paper at hand is: If \(\rho\) arises from a Katz modular form (which it always is if \(p>2\)) then the multiplicity of \(\rho\) in this Jacobian is larger than 1 if and only if \(\rho(\text{Frob}_p)\) is multiplication by a scalar.
